In The Fashionista's Closet: Miss Match

I was working on this outfit post of what I wore to church Sunday and read T Minus T Plus' post on "being matchy"  and wanted to give my input. I am a fan of contrasting colors, I typically like to wear two colors that don't 'go together' Here is what I put out to wear for church on Sunday:

BUT although I loved this color combo, I didn't wear it because frankly, these shoes hurt my feet and I didn't know how far I would have to park from my car into church. And there's nothing worse than not being able to walk cute because your feet hurt. You may think you're playing it off, but no. You just look like your feet hurt.

So instead I wore this:

Can we not discuss the poor quality of my picture taking skills because I have no tripod? Thanks.

Here's a close up of the shoes:

I loved them because they look like shoes for a doll

So as you can see I, not being a particular fan of the 'match' did in fact match my shoes to my dress although I didn't purchase them together and had no intention of wearing them at the same time. I also resisted the urge to carry my yellow bag and opted for black. So see friends, really it's all about your personal choice. No one was harmed in the matching of this outfit.

In The Fashionista's Closet: Hip Hip Hooray!

I got this dress at a thrift store for about 7 bucks, it looks very hippie chick. (Or should I say hippie chic!) It had a small tear on the seam but I stitched it right up and it's all good!
Full disclosure: I set the timer on the camera and was rushing to get in place and I stumbled but still tried to salvage the shot:

This is my second shot after the trip up:

The shenanigans I go through for my readers!

And here are a couple of close up shots of my hair:

*Sorry for the pale face, I had just put my foundation on*

These are twists that I do using Qhemet Biologics Amla and Olive Heavy Cream and Eco-styler gel. I don't part when I twist my hair except in the front to make it look neater. I then gather the twists together while rolling them and use bobby pins to hold. I've been doing this for years and people always think that it's complicated but it's not.

That's all for now. It took me forever to do this post, my computer was running slowly so I finally transferred or deleted the bazillion photos that I had stored. Yay to progress!

DAY OUT

WITH MEL INFRONT OF THE DUOMO

This morning, over a bowl of Dorset Cereals, I realised that it has been 2 years since I left Milan. That was a glorious summer filled with adventure! Gosh! The fun that we had! 2 hours of sleep and off we go to class.

My Summer in Milan and IED was literally a feast for all the senses. I could not stop marveling at the architecture, the innate chicness of everyone. Who would say no Parmigiana, Insalata di Buffala, Red Wine, Champagne, Proseco in the afternoon? The smell of fresh tomato sauce and pizza dough during lunch? How about being able to listen to big church bells in the morning or the sound of the birds chirping in an Agriturismo in Spoleto? I can't explain vibe of the entire country. Perhaps, overwhelmingly beautiful.... in all aspects, and while I was having breakfast with hunny, I felt a pang of sadness and then it hit me...... I FREAKING MISSSSSS ITALY!!! WAAAAAHHHHHHH..... its pathetic! hahahahaha. But hunny reminded me that I should look forward to next year when I will finally be back in Italy :)

Heres to that Glorious Summer!

A PRESTO ITALIA!

MARKET DAY - EMIRATES TRADING

I GOT MY PATTERN PAPER FROM EMIRATES TRADING, MOST OF MY PENCILS, RULERS ETC.

LIGHT AS A FEATHER. NATURAL HAIRED BRUSH IS PERFECT FOR APPLYING SMALL AMOUNT OF POWDER UNDER THE EYE AREA.

THESE SYNTHETIC PAINT BRUSHES ARE PERFECT FOR LIQUIDS AND CREAMS SUCH AS LIQUID FOUNDATIONS, CONCEALERS, PAINTS POTS.

NATURAL HAIRED CRAFT BRUSH. PERFECT FOR CONTOURING THE EYES, TEMPLES AND FOR A SHARPER CHEEK BONE DEFINITION FOR A MORE EDITORIAL LOOK

You are probably wondering as to why a Fashion and Make Up Blog would feature a Craft Store, well, for one its a great hunt for inexpensive Make Up Brushes. And even though they are inexpensive, they magically do the work as well as the brushes from the Make Up brands that we have all been used to.

Aside from that reason, I want to share this information to those who wish to pursue a career in Fashion Design as this where I picked up most of my markers before flying to Milan to study. Not exactly cheap. Back in 2008, it was AED 31 per marker. They have a great selection of paper or different sizes, paper for pattern making, rulers, portfolio books, all kinds of paints, pencils etc! :)

So, before heading out to the Burjuman or to Dubai Mall to pick out new brushes, why don't you head to Emirates Trading for an inexpensive alternative. :)

MARKET DAY - MOSHI MOSHI DAISO!

FIVE FALSE LASHES FOR AED 18.00. :)

I DEDICATED THIS ROW FOR NEUTRAL LIPSTICKS ONLY.

THIS PALETTE IS EXCELLENT AS THEY ARE REMOVABLE, SO YOU CAN HAVE ONE ROW DEDICATED FOR LIPSTICKS AND ANOTHER FOR STICK FOUNDATIONS OR WHATEVER IT IS THAT YOU WISH TO STORE.

There are soooo many reasons as to why I say thank you to Daiso. One, the items are very inexpensive. Two, they offer a lot of variety. And when I say variety, I am talking about, probably 3 to 5 kinds of one particular item. Three, you see items that you thought were not available in Dubai or ever available at all!

When I go there, I normally allot half a day because they have so many items, especially the small ones and I kind of take my sweet time in comparing the sizes, where I can use it, if its storage, what I can keep in it etc. Word of advice though, don't break your head and try to decipher the directions. It is unfortunate that most of the directions of the items are either in Japanese or in English that one might find hard to understand.

Aside from Beauty Supplies, DAISO also carries a great selection of Japanese Snacks that you might want to include in your shopping spree when you visit them next. :)

'Shop In' A Success!

A big THANK YOU to everyone who came out for the 'Day of Shopping In'! It was a great time and the ladies were most excited about their items! The next party is planned for the next couple of weeks in a different area of DFW so stay tuned for new unique things!

If you prefer to order online, please send me a message with your location so that I can quote you shipping charges.

Here are a few pics from the event:

In The Fashionista's Closet:

Do you see me striking my fave pose with the legs crossed?

I call this my 'Minnie Mouse' dress, doesn't it make you think of her? I love the colors and  it has pockets, what could be better?! It is from Ross but I got in February or March. It had a dirt stain on it so I got it for10 percent off. The salesperson did tell me that I could return it if the stain didn't come out but thank goodness it did. Had I thought of it I would have carried my big red bag with this but I was in a hurry therefore no handbag in the shot.

Polka dot and yellow dress - Ross
Patent belt - Came with another dress and I switched it out
Black strappy sandal - Nine West
Hair - I twist my hair into individual twists and then I roll the twists and bobby pin as I go down each side. I will post pics of my process another day.

When the month of June started, I was thinking of a good way to celebrate what is now universally known as the Pride Month and writing a feature on Pride Month is in a way my homage to the person who made me follow my dreams as a Make Up Artist.... KEVYN AUCOIN.

If you have read some of his books, he discussed the difficulties of growing up in Louisiana as a homosexual. He was confused, afraid to disappoint his parents, he was ridiculed, he was bullied. Kevyn's life is a testament that one can overcome these obstacles, be loved for who you really are, be successful and be fondly remembered and missed.

This is indeed a very sensitive topic, hence, I was quite hesitant to write this, but, in a world where people say that they have accepted a lot of things I think its about time that we finally accept that homosexuality is not a disease.

I have read a lot of stories where teen agers decide to end their lives because they are confused, afraid, those who have decided to come out are often bullied because of their sexual orientation. What they need is guidance, love and acceptance, more than anything else. These kids who have unfortunately have passed away could have been the next Herb Ritts, Meisel or Aucoin. I am a parent myself and should I be in the same position, I swear that I will not love my kids any less than I do now, in fact, I'd love them more.

Pardon me for a longer post than usual, but this post is very personal and among all that I have written, this one is close to my heart.

He has been gone for a long time and though I never had chance to meet him, I will forever be grateful for the inspiration that he has given me, still gives me through his work and the life that he lived..... THANK YOU MR. AUCOIN
